What in the Sam Hill are We Thinking?

This week, all we could talk about is the Miley Cyrus debacle. Here we sit on the brink of war with Syria, and this is all we seem to care about. The sad cry of a young woman who is trying to figure out who she is as a private individual in an awkward life that has had her in the spotlight since she can probably remember. I mean she’s Hannah Montana! She belongs to everybody. That’s what’s tough about celebrity. Now, you’ve got to understand when you’re famous the trade off that fame gives you in relation to a private life, but I believe there is still a reasonable expectation to be able to figure out who you are as an individual. I hope she finds it. That said, who invited Beetlejuice on stage? That suit Robin Thicke had on must’ve come straight out of Michael Keaton’s archives.

Anyway… that’s not my point. My point is that here we sit on the brink of war. We’re actually considering bombing Syria? I mean, Not only is Iran against that, but so is Russia and China. That’s a lot of countries I don’t trust the leadership of. I don’t want to end up in an all out war. No one I knows wants war. Remember, “We know Iraq has WMDs”? How’d that work out? Is this any different? Do you actually trust our government more now? We’re messing around in a conflict that isn’t ours, has powerful nations on the other side, and another president is considering acting without getting Congress’ approval. Our constitution states that a president can act in the case of immediate threat to the country, but has to come back to Congress for authorization within 60 days. Is Syria really a threat to us? They are embroiled in a civil war that has nothing to do with us. You’ve got a dictatorial regime against Al Q’aida. This isn’t Rocky 4, where we know Rocky’s just got to knock out Dolph Lundgren. These are bad guys against other bad guys, with a lot of decent people caught in the middle. They are the real losers in this, and we think that throwing rocks at a hornet’s nest is a good idea? No way. Leave us out of it.

Yeah, we can talk about that disaster of a VMA performance all we want, but we better start engaging on important issues too, or we’ll be stuck with whatever we get. Then it’s too late. Our country is twerking in the face of the rest of the world, and everyone else is going to get disgusted and stop taking us seriously real quick.
